WEEKLY EXPLORATIONS...

QUESTIONS:

What are some factors that make some stars brighter than others?

What are some factors that make some stars appear brighter than others?

What are some characteristics of our sun? How does our sun compare to other stars?

Discuss: Why is it important to study the sun?

What effect does DISTANCE from earth have on the APPEARED BRIGHTNESS of stars?

What is included in our solar system?

In-Class:

Monday  NO SCHOOL

Tuesday NO SCHOOL "ice" day

Wednesday.

QUESTION:

What causes some STARS to BE BRIGHTER?

What causes some STARS to APPEAR BRIGHTER (even if they are not actually as bright) as another?

1. Finish taking notes on the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram (a diagram that classifies stars based on their temperature/brightness)... identify WHERE our sun falls within the diagram and discuss how other stars compare...

2. CLASS INVESTIGATION #2: We will use flashlights to model TWO stars with much DIFFERENT "absolute magnitudes" (one brighter and one dimmer) and model to see if/how distance affects the "apparent magnitude" of each of those stars.

3. Sketch a model of our investigation & take notes on our findings...

Rewatch this video: Video to show how much the SIZE differs amongst stars....

Thursday
QUESTIONS:

What makes some stars brighter? What makes some stars APPEAR brighter?

What is included in OUR solar system?

1. Writing Assignment...Lesson Wrap up: Flashlight Findings (take this out of one of your envelopes)           Copy the 2 questions above about brightness and write a response and SHARE

2.  Complete the Google Classroom Savaas Realize Assignment: The Sun & STARS: 3 parts... Read &

Respond, Video & Quiz... Complete All 3 parts in order

3. Read/Research: Planets in OUR solar system  (Google Classroom, Textbook & provided websites)

2 parts...

1. Read pg. 248-249 and 258-259 and USE it to SORT & Order the planets on Slides 1-2 in

                        Google Classroom (drag)

***Choose 1 planet to research & take notes about...

2. Read/use pg. 248-249 and pg. 258-260 to Research  & Take NOTES in the ONE BOX

(find your planet on slide 3,4 or 5) Google Classroom on your planet

Assignment: Finish any work you didn't get done in class today...

Friday

QUESTION:

What is included in OUR solar system?

1. Turn in Flashlight Findings Paragraph (be sure your name is on it)

2. Work Time: Be sure BOTH Google Classroom Assignments from yesterday are completed 3. Present/Share Planet Research: and everyone should fill in all of the notes in their Google Classroom Doc... If you are absent, use your textbook and the links provided in Google Classroom to take notes about the other 7 planets... now we know how each planet is DIFFERENT/UNIQUE (contrast)

Now, let's COMPARE them and find SIMILARITIES:

4. Use presentations AND pg. 248-249 and 258-259 and USE it to fill out slide 6 from yesterday... write characteristics/similarities amongst the four INNER planets and do the same for the four OUTER planets

Planning Ahead:

Several writing assignments in the coming weeks.

No major tests/projects this week

QUESTION:
We went over the unit 3 science test on Matter - returned and went over questions

What effect does DISTANCE from earth have on the APPEARED BRIGHTNESS of stars?
1. Research Vocabulary terms - define "apparent magnitude" and "absolute magnitude" on green cards

Assignment(s):
1. Science Test corrections due Wednesday (if you choose to do them)
2. TYPE your paragraph you wrote for today about how stars are SIMILAR & DIFFERENT into Google Classroom (due WED)

Tuesday

QUESTION:

What effect does DISTANCE from earth have on the APPEARED BRIGHTNESS of stars?
1. Go Over Vocabulary terms - define "apparent magnitude" and "absolute magnitude" on green cards
2. Brainstorm, Share, Establish our Driving Questions for this lesson...
3. STUDENT ACTIVITY: Collecting a STAR Sample and making a frequency diagram and a bar graph comparing (appeared) STAR SIZE
Assignment(s):
1. Science Test corrections due Wednesday (if you choose to do them)
2. TYPE your paragraph you wrote for today about how stars are SIMILAR & DIFFERENT into Google Classroom (due WED)

Wednesday.

QUESTIONS:

What effect does DISTANCE from earth have on the APPEARED BRIGHTNESS of stars?

Turned in science test corrections...

1. FINISH STUDENT ACTIVITY from yesterday: Collecting a STAR Sample and making a frequency diagram and a bar graph comparing (appeared) STAR SIZE

2. CLASS INVESTIGATION #1: We will use flashlights to model two IDENTICAL stars (same absolute magnitude) and see if/how distance affects the "apparent magnitude" of stars.

3. Sketch a model of our investigation & take notes on our conclusion/findings... the CLOSER a star is to Earth the BRIGHTER it will appear, which is why our SUN looks SO BRIGHT, since it is the only star within our solar system, so it is the closest to us.

4. Discuss the DIFFERENCES students had researched about stars from last week... size, temperature, color and age were all characteristics identified by the class...

5. Video to show how much the SIZE differs amongst stars....

6. Slideshow to show how small we truly are...

NO Assignment

Thursday

QUESTION:

What causes some STARS to BE BRIGHTER?

What causes some STARS to APPEAR BRIGHTER (even if they are not actually as bright) as another?

Finished Slideshow from yesterday...

1. Opener: What do you notice/wonder about FIRE??? Video of a campfire - how is a FIRE similar to stars?

2. Take notes on the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram (a diagram that classifies stars based on their temperature/brightness)... we Colored the 4 columns... we labeled the axes....and talked about how stars are placed on the diagram...When, we identified WHERE our sun falls within the diagram - ****copy notes from a friend... we still have to finish this next week Tuesday, so you can get caught up Tuesday on this

Friday

NO CLASS DUE TO SCHOOL PEP RALLY

WEEKLY EXPLORATIONS...

What is Earth's place in the universe?

How are stars similar? How are stars different?

In-Class:

 Monday
QUESTION:
What is Earth's place in the universe?

1. Launch New Unit...
2. Vocabulary terms - define galaxy, universe and solar system on green cards
3. Brainstorm, Share, Establish our Driving Questions for this lesson...
4. Give "End of Lesson" Writing Assignment.... share that the "lesson" purpose is to collect EVIDENCE for the CER that we can use to support our answer to the lesson's driving question.  This evidence will come from a video & a research assignment that we will do tomorrow.
5. Video: Where is Earth?
Assignment(s): No assignment

Tuesday

QUESTION:

What is Earth's place in the universe?

1. Finish Video from yesterday

2. Research Assignment (see email or Google classroom for links you should use) & take Notes (handout)  As you read EACH sentence, ask yourself "does this sentence HELP me answer the question "Where is Earth located?"  If so,write it down, it is your evidence.  If not, keep reading....  Students had 26 minutes for their research, which gave them 5-6 minutes for each website/diagram, which should have been about enough.

Assignment(s): FINISH READING and collecting your Evidence

Wednesday.

QUESTION:

What is Earth's place in the universe?

1. Discuss/Review... researching for a purpose.... How did you do?

2. Writing... Fact Based Argument... (use the CER format) Do this on the provided yellow slip - Now, use the evidence you have collected from our video and our research assignment to answer our lesson question, What is Earth's place in the universe?
